Environmental surveillance is typically performed on surfaces by use of a sterile swab to recover organisms from surfaces. Materials of surface collection are available such as cotton, gauze , sponges or wipe sampling devices. Many organochlorine pesticides were banned in the United States, although a few are still registered for use in this country. Orgnaochlorine pesticides accumulate in the environment. They are very persistent and move long distances in surface runoff or groundwater.
